Ausgehend von den Fragen Was ist Sprache?, Woher kommt Sprache?, Wie funktioniert Sprache? wird ein Überblick über die wichtigsten Themen der Linguistik als allgemeiner Sprachwissenschaft gegeben. Im Zentrum steht eine einführende Charakterisierung des Sprachsystems in seinen phonetisch-phonologischen, morphologischen, syntaktischen und semantischen Strukturaspekten. Gesichtspunkte des Sprachwandels und des Sprachvergleichs bilden den Abschluß der Darstellung.
