Die Lektüre einer Ganzschrift im Deutschunterricht ist vom Lehrplan vorgesehen. Außerdem herrscht Konsens darüber, dass die Gegenwartsliteratur verstärkt Eingang in den Deutschunterricht finden soll, um Schülerinnen und Schülern Zugang zur Teilhabe am kulturellen Leben zu ermöglichen.
Die Lehrveranstaltung verfolgt zwei Ziele: Zum einen führt sie in die Didaktik und Methodik der Behandlung von Ganzschriften am Beispiel ausgewählter Gegenwartsromane ein. Zum anderen werden Grundlagen einer Theorie des deutschsprachigen Gegenwartsromans erarbeitet. Voraussetzung zur erfolgreichen Teilnahme an diesem Seminar ist die Bereitschaft zur Lektüre mehrerer Romane. Die zu behandelnden Primärtexte (von Wilhelm Genazino, Ralf Rothmann, Juli Zeh u. a.) werden in der ersten Sitzung gemeinsam ausgewählt.
