230623 Native American Literatures and Cultures (S) (SoSe 2026)

This course focuses on Indigenous cultures and their writings (including all genres) from the assimilation era to the present, tracing Indigenous self-representation. It aims to introduce students to early texts, boarding school experiences, and contemporary works that capture the Indigenous way of thinking, approaches to white culture, transgenerational trauma, and Indigenous identity, challenging their supposedly missing cultural, political, and literary invisibility.

Primary readings will include works by, e.g., Charles A. Eastman, Zitkala-Ša, Louise Erdrich, Joy Harjo, and Tommy Orange.
