This course aims to introduce students to literary genres, literary theory, and the practice of literary analysis within the field of American Studies. Students will learn to apply analytical tools necessary for discussing and interpreting different forms of texts. The course examines major works from different periods and genres, including a novel, a short story, and selected American poetry. Core texts include Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper (1892), Toni Morrison’s Beloved (1987), and selected poems by Emily Dickinson and Langston Hughes.
Each text will be examined in detail through close reading, attention to historical and cultural contexts, and discussion of various theoretical and methodological approaches to literary study.
