English is, in every sense of the word, a global language - but it is not a single entity. There are hundreds (or more) dialects and varieties of English, and speakers constantly come into contact with speakers of other dialects, both in face-to-face situations and in digital communication.
In this class, we will look at some dialect contact phenomena. We will aim to understand and describe what is happening, reconcile this with theoretical concepts, and also see what perceptions and attitudes speakers have of and towards dialect contact.
Students in the old BA programme (who started before SoSe2023): it is strongly recommended that you have completed BM1 (by passing the language proficiency test) and BM3 (by passing the exam).
Students in the new BA programme (who started in SoSe2023 or later, or switched programmes voluntarily) are required to have completed Basis1 (by passing the language proficiency test). I also strongly recommend that you have completed Basis3 – especially the introductory lectures.
If you are in the M. Ed., these requirements are not relevant for you.
Literature will be made available on moodle.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
