Das BA-Seminar untersucht das vielseitige Genre der Abenteuerromane im Kontext imperialer Politik seit Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts. Martin Greens ‚klassische‘ Studie „Dreams of Adventure, Deeds of Empire“ (1980) bildet den Ausgangspunkt für eine Perspektive auf die Entwicklung des Genres, bei der der weitreichende Einfluss des Imperialismus auf die britische, US-amerikanische und europäische Kultur vom 17. bis ins 20. Jahrhundert in die Analysen einbezogen wird. Ausführlich werden im Seminar Daniel Defoes Genre-begründender Roman "Robinson Crusoe" (in deutscher Übersetzung) behandelt sowie Joseph Conrads "Heart of Darkness" (im Original), daneben eine Reihe weiterer Texte u.a. von Walter Scott, James F. Cooper und Jack London in Auszügen. Ziel des Seminars ist die Erarbeitung eines genaueren Verständnisses des Genres in seiner Entwicklung unter Berücksichtigung sozialgeschichtlicher, narratologischer, psychoanalytischer und postkolonialer Aspekte.

Es wird empfohlen, sich die Reclam-Ausgabe von Conrads "Heart of Darkness" zu besorgen sowie ein antiquarisches Exemplar der Reclam-Ausgabe (Leipzig) von Defoes "Robinson Crusoe". Für Defoe und einige andere Texte gilt als Trigger-Warnung, dass sich darin zeittypische kolonialrassistische Bezeichnungen finden.
