230371 Applying Linguistics in the Secondary School Classroom: Focus on Linguistic Landscaping (S) (SoSe 2026)

Contents, comment

In this course, students will learn about linguistic landscapes (LL) from both linguistic and didactic perspectives, including terminology, concepts and methodology, and engage in an interactive LL project. We will explore the different ways in which languages are used in the public sphere, focusing on different uses of English, the role of multilingualism, and the potential of LL for English language teaching.
As you prepare for your own LL project, you will learn how to collect, evaluate and discuss visual data for LL research. Adopting a practice-oriented approach, you will also design tasks and materials that incorporate LL as a 'beyond the classroom' activity in secondary English language education.

Student information

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.

Having completed the other elements of the Basis 3 module (i.e. "Introduction to English Linguistics" (Basis3.1) and "Introduction to Sociolinguistics" (Basis3.2)) before attending this seminar is highly recommended.
