Gestures play a crucial role in spontaneous everyday communication as they accompany spoken expressions and can – under certain circumstances – even replace speech. In this seminar, we will focus on models and theories of the neurocognition of gesture and speech production. The comprehension of gesture and speech as a composite signal will also be addressed as well as the lateralization of gesture processing in the left and right hemisphere. We will discuss, how gestures and speech interact for the expression of meaning, which fundamentals enable the optimal interaction of the two modalities and how and when the two modalities can be used in a compensatory manner.
