Pragmatic enrichment is ubiquitous and omnipresent in language. We systematically enrich the interpretation of linguistic expressions beyond their literal meaning. In this course we will look into the phenomenon of conversational implicature which has been broadly discussed in semantics and pragmatics as well as in the philosophy of language. The different theoretical approaches will be contrasted with findings from psycho- and neurolinguistics, addressing the cognitive foundations underlying the phenomenon. As a side effect, we will gain insights into a wide variety of methods that have been applied. We aim at proposing ideas for new studies in this still rather active research area.
