In this course students are introduced to the syntactic structure of English using a generative framework. Following Radford, the course moves from word categories and phrase structure to clause structure, movement, and functional projections, with sustained practice in X-bar theory, tree drawing, and syntactic argumentation.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Identify lexical and functional categories in English
- Construct X-bar–compliant phrase markers
- Analyze constituent structure using standard syntactic tests
- Represent movement, heads, complements, and specifiers in trees
- Provide principled syntactic analyses of English sentences

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete.
