230180 Measuring Speech Variation (S) (SoSe 2026)

This class will cover the following topics, focusing on varieties of English

- The measurement of segmental and suprasegmental dimensions of speech-based variation (geographical, social, demographic, individual) using symbolic, perceptual and acoustic metrics and tools
- A broad overview of (some) findings concerning speech-based variation, including selected geographical regions and other factors (e.g., age, social group identity, gender, sexual orientation, formality, mood, and more).
- Formulating a (small) research question related to the topic of speech variation, deriving and following an appropriate research design to answer this question, and presenting the results of this work in a scientific presentation.
