In this Study Group we are going to examine various aspects of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit", such as, for example, TH as 'Bildungsroman', symbolism in TH, relationship to LotR, connection to Tolkien's own biography, mythology, names and languages related to TH, the language of TH, and other topics which we as a group will decide on. Since study groups are student-led and student-powered, this is also a good opportunity to gain experience in presenting material, leading discussions, and analysing and interpreting texts in a group of peers.
Looking forward to seeing you in the world of Middle Earth!

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
Participants should have read “The Hobbit” and/or have watched the film, both preferably in English. As this is a 'Studiengruppe' and involves only students, all participants can and should suggest topics, and everyone will lead one or two sessions on their favourite topic(s) to gain their credit points.
