Das Kolloquium „Geschichte und Öffentlichkeit“ verfolgt das Ziel, die Studierenden für die unterschiedlichen Möglichkeiten und Instrumente der Geschichtsvermittlung zu sensibilisieren. Neben der Schule erfüllen außerschulische Lernorte wie Museen, Archive, Gedenkstätten etc., aber auch Medien wie Film, Fernsehen, Hörfunk, populäre Sachbücher, Zeitungen und Zeitschriften wichtige vermittelnde Funktionen, die auch im Rahmen aktueller schulischer Lehr- und Lernprozesse verstärkt berücksichtigt werden.
Mit den außerschulischen Bezügen werden gleichzeitig Berufsfelder für Historiker vorgestellt, die für Studierende der fachwissenschaftlichen Studiengangsvarianten von besonderem Interesse sein können.
Im Kolloquium stellen die in der Regel auswärtigen Gäste geschichtsdidaktische Positionen bzw. den Umgang mit Geschichte und ihrer Vermittlung in ihren jeweiligen Arbeitsfeldern anhand konkreter Beispiele vor.

Die mit dem Kolloquiumsbesuch verbundene Studienleistung besteht aus der Anfertigung von Protokollen zu zwei Sitzungen, die zentrale Elemente des Vortrags und der Diskussion vorstellen und diese auf der Grundlage weiterführender Literatur in den Forschungskontext einordnen. Die Protokolle haben einen Umfang von etwa drei Seiten, werden bei der Veranstalterin/beim Veranstalter des Kolloquiums eingereicht und mit dieser/diesem besprochen.
