Social network analysis is a tool which concentrates on the relationships between actors (individuals, organizations, institutions, states, etc.). The main premise is the patterns of relationships between actors influence them in multiple ways. The aim of this course is to introduce students to network analysis through empirical studies, theories and models by focusing on its use in social sciences. In order to do that the course has two main components: theoretical and practical. We will first study the theoretical foundations of social network analysis and the main concepts used within this approach. Then, we will investigate and critically discuss the application of network analysis in various sub-fields in social scientific research such as social support, health, and migration. During the practical part, students will acquire skills which will enable them to utilize network analysis in their projects. The students will have an opportunity to learn about data collection methods and basic analysis techniques using computer software UCINET and VennMaker.
