Die gängige neoklassische Theorie kann die Existenz unterschiedlicher Varianten kapitalistischer Systeme nicht erklären. In den 1990er Jahren hat sich allerdings die vergleichende Politische Ökonomie als ein Forschungsprogramm etabliert, das unterschiedliche Spielarten des Kapitalismus differenziert: anhand des institutionellen Designs werden liberale, Markt-koordinierte Marktwirtschaften (v.a. die USA) von koordinierten Marktwirtschaften (wie Deutschland und Japan) unterschieden. In den letzten jahren werden von einigen Autoren wider Gemeinsamkeiten kapitalistischer Systeme betont, denen eine unverselle Neigung zur "Entbettung" der Märkte innewohne.
