Contents, comment

In this advanced seminar, we engage with global development goals from a perspective of global social policy and governance. It is particularly addressed to students who have a very good command of written and spoken English, and who like to actively engage in 'learning by doing' exercises. The seminar leader will provide some basic information (lectures) in the first sessions to establish a common ground of concepts, terms and approaches.
For the most part of the seminar, in an inter-active process, students and seminar leader will engage with and explore the process of shifting from the Millennium Development Goals to the Sustainable Development Goals. The students will work in groups on different key social goals to understand how they have been dealt with by the MDGs, how successful the MDGs addressed the respective problems, how the process of formulating the related SDGs developed, and what the specific SDGs imply for continuation and change.
The sessions will consist of group works, different types of students’ presentations, simulation games, etc. Potentially, students will produce a booklet, film or similar output of this work.
The seminar intends to facilitate students’ learning on how to develop research questions, how to research global social policy, how to collect data, and how to turn data collection into a product that is also accessible to, and informative for, others.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
