This transdisciplinary course presents an overview of key concepts, recent literature, and debates concerning contemporary cross-border mobility through the lens of and scholarship on transnational dynamics. We will study notions such as citizenship, community and ethnicity; the representation of different kinds of institutions; connections and networks of movers and non-movers and the role of materiality; and how cross-border mobility is framed - security, development, humanitarianism. There is no regional focus in the course, thus, students will examine themes through theories and case studies from around the world.
The sessions will start with a brief lecture by the instructor and will be followed by a (10-minute) presentation of that week’s theme, in which student(s) responsible for that week will raise critical readings of the required text (and recommended articles) through comments and questions. This introduction will be followed by a class discussion. For each session there will be one required text and recommended ones. Attendance and active class participation are required to facilitate maximum learning outcomes.
