230632 Approaches and Methods in English Language Teaching (Secondary Schools) (S) (WiSe 2025/2026)

Contents, comment

What does it mean to teach a language as a means of actual communication? Which methods can support students in actually exchanging information and opinions in a meaningful way in the foreign language? In this course we will learn about, try out and reflect on different approaches to communicative language teaching: ranging from activities to encourage students to communicate and collaborate in the classroom, using drama-pedagogical elements, to task-based learning and possibilities of teaching beyond the classroom and in inclusive learning groups.

Student information

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.

To pass this class (Studienleistung) you will present a digital micro-teaching unit applying one of the methods mentioned above and putting it into writing for a 'method compilation' which will be available to the whole course. If you want to obtain exam credits (Prüfungsleistung) you have to write a paper of 3.000 words on a choice of issues of foreign language teaching.
