In this seminar, different forms of old-age protection around the world will be discussed from both comparative and historical perspectives. The seminar will examine the emergence and development of pension systems, nursing homes, and other institutions for the protection and support of older people. It will also discuss relevant policy approaches, such as prevention, rehabilitation, long-term care, and community care, as additional ways of addressing old-age protection. Finally, “old age” itself will be examined as a social category, including how it is defined and recognized in different societies.
