220063 Fascism and Extreme Nationalism in Interwar Europe (S) (SoSe 2015)

The two decades between WW1 and WW2 were marked by an unprecedented political radicalisation in Europe. Following the “golden age of liberalism,” the interwar years witnessed the rise of extreme political parties that pretended to be determined to overcome capitalism and liberal democracy. Instead, they advocated new social and political regimes defined by criteria of ethnicity and race. This seminar will take a closer look at fascist and extreme nationalist “movements” throughout Europe. It is guided by a twofold perspective: On the one hand, the rise and political relevance of different fascist movements in countries like Italy, Germany, Spain, France, England, Romania and Hungary will be discussed. On the other hand, these case studies will be analysed as part of a broader development, as aspects of an entangled history of fascism and extreme nationalism. This seminar is taught in the English language. It is therefore an ideal opportunity to practice one’s English in an academic environment. International students are particularly welcome.
