Trost zu spenden galt einst als eine der wichtigsten Aufgaben von Dichtung. Aktuelle Literaturtheorien hingegen scheinen den Begriff kaum noch zu berücksichtigen. Ist auch die Gegenwartsliteratur ‚trostlos‘ geworden? Und findet man diese ‚konsolatorische‘ Funktion nur noch in der - literaturwissenschaftlich meist ignorierten - Ratgeber- und Geschenkliteratur, die in den Buchhandlungen oft an der Kasse ausliegt?
Das Seminar befasst sich grundlegend mit dem Trost in Literatur, Rhetorik und Theologie. Literargeschichtlich spannt es einen weiten Bogen von der ‚Consolatio philosophiae‘ des Boethius über den ‚Ackermann aus Böhmen‘ bis hin zu den Trostgedichten aus Barock und Romantik.
