230043 Narrative Across Media (S) (SoSe 2015)

On a theoretical basis, this seminar works with, primarily, Marie-Laure Ryan's theoretical approaches to intermedial storytelling, looking at implications of terms such as 'intermediality', 'multimodality' or 'transmediality' for narratology. (Ryan's Narrative Across Media, 2004; Ryan & Grishakova's Intermediality and Storytelling, 2010; Page & Thomas' New Narratives: Stories and Storytelling in the Digital Age, 2011; Ryan & Thon's Storyworlds Across Media: Toward A Media-Conscious Narratology, 2014).
After having been introduced to these general ideas and concepts (in first half of the term), students work on a project in groups in the second half, with the help of much more specified theoretical texts - getting into "narrative analysis across media" themselves by applying the abstract ideas that they have learned to different types of texts. Possible projects are the analysis of a specific type of narrative/storytelling in interaction/gesture, film, music/radio plays/audio books or digital storytelling on the Web. An Intermedial Analysis of, for instance, a screen adaptation of a book is also a possible subject for analysis.
Students will need to present their results to class at the end of the term.

Students will have to have completed at least one of the Analyzing and Interpreting Literary Texts - classes that are offered in the module.
