Das Seminar bietet eine fundierte Einführung in zentrale Theorien, Paradigmen und empirische Analysen zum Zusammenhang von Bildung und sozialer Ungleichheit. Im Fokus stehen klassische und aktuelle bildungssoziologische Perspektiven. Zu den behandelten Theorien zählen unter anderem Pierre Bourdieus Konzept des kulturellen Kapitals und der Habitus, Émile Durkheims Verständnis von Bildung als sozialer Institution sowie Niklas Luhmanns systemtheoretischer Ansatz. Ergänzend werden Ansätze wie Rational-Choice-Theorien, Intersektionalität und poststrukturalistische Perspektiven diskutiert. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Analyse von Mechanismen sozialer Reproduktion, institutioneller Diskriminierung sowie der Bedeutung von Geschlecht, Ethnizität und sozialer Herkunft im Bildungskontext. Darüber hinaus thematisiert das Seminar aktuelle Herausforderungen wie die Ökonomisierung und Privatisierung von Bildung. Internationale Vergleiche (z. B. PISA-Studien) dienen dazu, die unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen von Bildungsungleichheit im globalen Kontext zu verstehen. Die Teilnehmende lernen, das im Seminar erworbene theoretische und analytische Handwerkszeug einzusetzen, um institutionelle Bildungsprozesse kritisch zu hinterfragen und die Rolle des Bildungssystems in der Reproduktion und Überwindung sozialer Ungleichheiten zu reflektieren.
