230741 Englisch: English Academic Writing IV: Writing for Theses, Dissertations, and other long texts. (S) (SoSe 2025)

Note: this course takes place online, with weekly Zoom meetings and extensive work on Moodle.
This course is intended for any student who is writing, or plans to write a longer academic work in English. (BA thesis, MA thesis, or PhD dissertation, or other projects). While this course is not discipline-specific, general tactics and writing methods, as well as research methods and time management skills will be covered.
This course is open to all levels, but a minimum level of B2 is recommended.
Topics covered:
• Critical thinking and argumentation
• Research techniques and source evaluation
• Organizing your writing
• Writing literature reviews
• Style and tone in academic writing
• Editing and revision strategies
• Grant proposals and abstracts
• Preparing for publication
• Problems specific to German (or Spanish, Arabic, etc.) speakers when working in English
• Presenting your written work, particularly in a conference setting

Topics are open to change/addition based on student feedback - this will be discussed during the first meeting.

NOTE: A c-test (placement test) result is not required for this course.
