230729 Englisch: Special Topics: The History and Culture of Scotland, Level C1 (S) (SoSe 2025)

This course provides an in-depth exploration of Scotland's rich cultural heritage, spanning history, literature, art, music, politics, and traditions. We will examine how Scotland’s identity has been shaped through centuries while practising all four languages skills (speaking, reading, writing, and listening). We will explore the unique place that Scotland holds in the United Kingdom and the larger world.
This course will be held in a hybrid format: you can join either via Zoom or in person.

Note: this course fulfils the Unicert III course requirements.

• Prehistory and the formation of Scotland
• The Wars of Independence
• The Scottish Enlightenment
• The languages of Scotland: Scottish English, Scots, and Scottish Gaelic
Auld Reekie: Edinburgh
• The dear green place: Glasgow
• Northern Scotland and the Scottish Islands
• The music of Scotland: Bagpipes and beyond
• The literature of Scotland: Robert Burns
• Contemporary Scottish literature
• Scottish Folklore and Mythology
• Modern Scotland and the question of independence

At the end of the course, a class trip to Scotland may be possible. This will be discussed during our first meeting.

Note: This class starts in week 2. Our first meeting will be on April 15th.

Requirements include regular attendance, active participation in class discussions, and three main assignments:
1. Each student will choose a novel from a list and write a five-page report on it.
2. Students will choose one film from a list and write a critique of it (2-3 pages).
3. Each student (potentially with a partner) will be assigned one topic from our list and prepare a five-minute presentation to be delivered at the beginning of class.

Further information on the assignments will be discussed in class.
