Der Begriff „Engagement“ hat oft einen negativen Beigeschmack, da er an die ideologische Instrumentalisierung von Kunst und Literatur erinnert. Dabei kann in Vergessenheit geraten, dass der Ausdruck „littérature engagée“ eine Reaktion auf den Faschismus in Europa war und zentrale Fragen der Nachkriegsliteratur aufrief: Wie sollen Ästhetik und Politik in einer krisengeschüttelten Welt zusammenhängen? Was ist die Rolle von Schriftsteller:innen in Zeiten politischer Konflikte?
Ausgehend von den Grundlagen von Jean-Paul Sartre und Theodor W. Adorno zur „littérature engagée“ untersuchen wir exemplarische Reaktionen von Schriftsteller:innen unserer Gegenwart auf die Kriege in der Ukraine und in Israel. Ergänzend besuchen wir vereinzelt Vorträge und Lesungen des Literaturwissenschaftlichen Kolloquiums zum Thema „Literatur und Menschenrechte“, um die Seminardiskussion zu vertiefen. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage, ob und wie der Begriff „Engagement“ heute als produktive Kategorie zur Beschreibung künstlerischer und literarischer Weltzugänge genutzt werden kann.
