Verschiedene Studien verweisen auf einen Zusammenhang zwischen Erwerbsbedingungen und Beteiligungsmöglichkeiten am Arbeitsplatz einerseits und Einstellungen zu Demokratie und Vertrauen in demokratische Institutionen andererseits. Der Zusammenhang von Arbeit, sozialem Zusammenhalt und Demokratie ist schon länger Gegenstand wissenschaftlicher Analysen. So hat z.B. Axel Honneth unter dem Titel „Der arbeitende Souverän“ eine normative Theorie der Arbeit vorgelegt. Mit dem Ansatz der „Wirtschaftsdemokratie“ wiederum werden – insbesondere von gewerkschaftlicher Seite – Perspektiven zur Gestaltung von Wirtschaft, Arbeit und betrieblicher Mitbestimmung entwickelt. Vor dem Hintergrund, dass in Wissenschaft und Öffentlichkeit immer häufiger von einer Krise der Demokratie die Rede ist, bietet dieses Seminar die Möglichkeit, sich vertiefend theoretisch und empirisch mit dem Zusammenhang von Arbeit, Wirtschaft und Demokratie auseinanderzusetzen. Eine Bereitschaft zur gemeinsamen Arbeit an Texten wird vorausgesetzt.
