The course explores one of the most significant events after the Cold War: the collapse and transformations of socialism. It starts with introducing students to socialism ideology and the living experiences of ordinary people, then focuses on the transitions of institutions, markets, and societies under late and post-socialism. It analyses these dynamics of change and continuity in the contexts of the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, Eastern Germany, China, and Vietnam through emergent forms of production, the commodification of labour and land, nostalgia, gender, identity, and personhood. From an anthropological lens, the course will focus on ordinary people’s struggles to redefine and manage their everyday life experiences in new settings.
