What does it mean to teach literature and film for social justice? What texts can we use to teach about social justice? And how can we teach literature with a focus on social justice in a way that addresses and includes all our learners? In this seminar, we will explore how literary and visual texts can be used to foster critical awareness of social justice issues among secondary school learners. Engaging with texts that address themes such as power, privilege and identity, we will design lesson plans that integrate such themes while aligning with curriculum standards. Additionally, we will develop strategies for making these themes accessible to all students and discuss how to choose and approach texts to meet the diverse needs of a heterogeneous classroom.
