The role of civil society in the postsoviet space is still unclear: it is often stated that it is still a weak
phenomenon and that a significant variation within the posttransition context exists.
The course is focused on civil society developments looking at Estonia, Kazakhstan, Russia and
Ukraine. The relationship between civil society and the state as well as the role of the European Union in strengthening civil society in these countries will be investigated. Through the analysis of different empirical cases, the seminar will question whether and to what extent civil society can function in a prodemocratic way in the postsoviet space.
