Die Geschichtsschreibung teilt die Geschichte in verschiedene Epochen ein, gleichzeitig werden die Epochengrenzen immer wieder hinterfragt. Das 19. Jahrhundert wird vielfach als ein langes Jahrhundert bezeichnet, Anfangs- und Endpunkt bilden nicht die Zahlen des Kalenders, sondern historische Ereignisse wie die Revolution und der Weltkrieg. Periodisierungen sind nur eine der vielen Fragen, der sich die Geschichtswissenschaft widmet. Im Seminar werden wir die Grundprobleme und Aufgaben historischen Arbeitens diskutieren. Gleichzeitig soll der Kurs eine Einführung in das lange 19. Jahrhundert bieten und dabei einen besonderen inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt auf den europäischen Imperialismus, u.a. den „Scramble for Africa“, setzen.
