Mimesis, das im Exil entstandene und 1946 erschienene magnum opus des Romanisten Erich Auerbach, ist ein Klassiker der Literaturgeschichtsschreibung. Das in jüngerer Zeit auch von der Kulturwissenschaft wiederentdeckte Buch kann als Leitfaden und Einführung ins Feld der historischen und komparatistischen Literaturwissenschaft dienen.
Das Seminar verfolgt ein zweifaches Ziel: 1. die Diskussion von Auerbachs Leitbegriffen ("Mimesis", "tragischer Realismus", "Geschichte", "Stil", "sermo humilis") im Spannungsfeld von Romantik und Historismus; 2. die Auseinandersetzung mit möglichst vielen der von ihm kommentierten Texte.
