We use language to perform many different acts; to make promises, assertions, conjectures, and jokes. In this seminar, we will consider socially and politically significant speech acts. These may include nefarious insinuations/dogwhistles ("Did you know that Obama's middle name is 'Hussain'?"), stereotypical generalisations ("Women are bossy") and racist prohibitions ("No blacks, no dogs, no Irish"). Focusing on texts written in the last five to ten years, we'll ask how these speech acts are performed, what they do, and how they can be challenged. No prior knowledge is required.
