Der als "Retrosynthese" bezeichneten Syntheseplanung beim Aufbau von komplexen organischen Molekülen kommt insbesondere bei der Herstellung von Arzneistoffen und Naturstoffen eine große Bedeutung zu. Dabei zu berücksichtigende Aspekte sind unter anderem die Verwendung einfacher und gut zugänglicher Ausgangsverbindungen und Reagenzien als auch die Minimierung der erforderlichen Anzahl an Syntheseschritten. In der Lehrveranstaltung werden typische Retrosynthese-Strategien zum Aufbau mehrfach funktionalisierter organischer Moleküle besprochen, ebenso wie die Realisierung der hierbei generierten Retrosynthese durch Wahl entsprechend geeigneter Reagenzien und Katalysatoren.
