Vergils Meisterwerk operiert auf mehreren Ebenen: So wird der lange Weg des Aeneas geschildert, bis er in Latium ankommt. Auf der göttlichen Ebene kämpft Juno verbissen, aber vergeblich darum, daß Aeneas kein zweites Troia errichten kann. Und auf einer weiteren Ebene vermag es Vergil immer wieder zeitgenössische Themen, v.a. der beginnende Prinzipat des Augustus, im Werk zu vermitteln. Dieser letzte Aspekt soll im Vordergrund des Seminars stehen: Wie präsentiert und legitimiert der Dichter Augustus und dessen Machterlangung sowie die Vormachtstellung Roms?
Die erste Sitzung findet am 13.10. statt.

Für die Lateiner unbedingt zur Anschaffung empfohlen: die Vergil-Gesamtausgabe von R.B. Mynors (Oxford).
Für alle zur Anschaffung empfohlen: die mehrbändige (!) zweisprachige Reclam-Ausgabe von G.u. E. Binder. Der Kommentar ist nämlich exzellent.
