Black popular cultures and movements from the United States have dominated perceptions of the African diaspora, often ignoring the fact that the majority of Afrodescendants live in other parts of the Americas such as the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. While the global impact of the US experience will be a key topic in this seminar, special consideration will be given here to the diversity of Afro-diasporic movements and cultures that make up the Black Americas (in the plural). Focusing on the mobility of black cultural products, musical genres and political discourses, as well as the role of migrations, we will discuss how the hemispheric dialogues between places as far apart as New York, Rio de Janeiro, Kingston, Panama and Havana have contributed to the emergence of transnational imaginaries and networks of solidarity in border- crossing liberation struggles and new identity constructions from the early 20th century to the present.
