Die Veranstaltung ist als vergleichende Einführung in neue und ältere Theorien der Weltgesellschaft gedacht. Weltgesellschaftstheorien betrachten die globale Welt, nicht Nationalstaaten als Bezugsraum soziologischer Analyse.
Im Zentrum stehen folgende Fragen: Wie begründen die Theoretiker die Existenz einer Weltgesellschaft? Welche Perspektiven auf Gesellschaft ergeben sich aus der jeweilligen Theorie? Welche Konsequenzen resultieren daraus für die soziologische Analyse?
