This research class is conceived as a two-year project and essentially consists of two main parts
1) An advanced seminar style part that deals with the basics and various aspects of world society theory. Based on common and intensive readings, this part is designed to provide a substantive meeting ground for discussions on:
- Concepts of world society and varieties of world society theory
- The differentiation of world society (--links to theories of social differentiation)
- The history of world society (--links to global history)
- The evolution of world society (--links to theories of social evolution
- Various specific aspects of world society (political system of world society etc.)
- World society studies and advanced social ontology
Details of this part are to be worked out in close collaboration among all participants (“true” seminar style)
2) A part in which participants present their own work (PhD proposals, dissertation chapters, conference papers, draft articles)
Research classes will be flexible according to demand, so while some classes will be purely seminar style (part I) and others purely colloquium style (part II), some classes will be mixed or even intensive double sessions.
This research class is for PhD students who are interested in and work broadly in the subject area. It is open to interested graduate (MA) students.
Language policy: The language used in class is flexible, but the assumption is that English is the default language for discussions. However, when participants present their own work, it is the written language of the project that determines the language of discussion (so dissertations written in German would usually be discussed in German as well).
