Mit den Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrisen hat der Begriff Kapitalismus wieder mehr öffentliche und wissenschaftliche Aufmerksamkeit auf sich gezogen. Was trägt er zu Beschreibung, Analyse und Erklärung der Krisen bei? Wie theoretisch schlüssig und analytisch tragfähig ist er im Vergleich zu Konzepten wie Marktgesellschaft? Diese und weitere Fragen stehen im Zentrum des Seminars. Als Grundlage für die Diskussion dienen überwiegend jüngere, meist wirtschaftssoziologische Arbeiten zu den Konzepten Marktgesellschaft und Kapitalismus und ihrem theoretischen, normativen und empirischen Zusammenhang. Die Veranstaltung arbeitet theoriezentriert. Zugleich setzt sie die diskutierten theoretischen Ansätze mit empirischer Forschung in Bezug.
Ziel des Seminars ist es, auf der Basis einer sorgfältigen Unterscheidung der Konzepte Marktgesellschaft und Kapitalismus die Aufklärungsleistung soziologischer und anderer sozialwissenschaftlicher Ansätze zur Gegenwartsanalyse und ihre politischen Implikationen kritisch zu diskutieren.Leicht zugängliche einführende Literatur:

Die Veranstaltung ermöglicht den Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern ein sehr hohes Maß an Eigeninitiative und Selbststudium und verlangt die Bereitschaft dazu. Zum Selbststudium gehört zunächst die sorgfältige Lektüre der Basistexte zu jeder Sitzung. Die Studienleistung umfasst die selbstständige Präsentation eines Textes im Seminar mit Thesenpapier sowie die Moderation der Diskussion dazu. Erwartet werden engagierte und ergebnisorientierte Arbeit in Kleingruppen im Seminar sowie laufende aktive Beteiligung an der Seminardiskussion. Der kumulative Diskussions- und Lernprozess verlangt eine regelmäßige Teilnahme.
Einzelleistungen sind in Form einer Hausarbeit möglich, erwünscht ist auch eine Präsentation zum Hausarbeitsthema im Seminar.
