In der Vorlesung wird ein einführender Überblick über theoretische Perspektiven auf Erziehung und Bildung gegeben. Die Vorlesung gliedert sich in drei Teile: Erstens wird die historische Entwicklung philosophischer Konzeptionen von Bildung und Erziehung nachgezeichnet, angefangen bei Klassikern der Antike über das humanistische Bildungsideal der Rennaissance und die Debatten der Aufklärung des Neuhumanismus bis hin zu den Diskussionen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Zweitens werden interdisziplinäre Einblicke in Bildungs- und Erziehungstheorien gegeben, wobei u. a. sozial- und verhaltenswissenschaftliche Blickwinkel kontrastiert werden. Drittens werden aktuelle Debatten um Bildung und Erziehung umrissen, etwa mit Blick auf Geschlechtertheorien, Post- und Transhumanismus sowie vor dem Hintergrund verschiedener Zeitdiagnosen.
