230072 Borderlands: Representations of Borders, Climate Justice, and Migration in Film (S) (WiSe 2024/2025)

Contents, comment

In her pathbreaking texts Borderlands/La Frontera, Gloria Anzaldúa defined the physical space between he US and Mexico, but also the experience of humans positioned between borders, cultures, languages, genders etc. as an "open wound" and a creator of difference. This seminar introduces students to filmic representations of borders and border regimes as well as questions on global inequalities and climate justice as they are related to migration. We will discuss basic texts and concepts of border and migration literature and introductory texts on film analysis to discuss filmic representations of borderlands and the means through which films contextualise related questions of colonial legacies and persistent inequalities.
