According to a report by Save the Children (2023), 1 out of 6 children worldwide live in areas affected by armed conflict. About 40% of the more than 100 million forcibly displaced people worldwide are below the 18 years of age (UNHCR, 2023). Exposure to armed conflict and displacement in childhood and adolescence can increase the risk of mental disorders, underscoring the need for effective prevention and intervention programs to protect and promote the mental health of young people affected by these adversities.
This course aims to give an overview of existing prevention and intervention approaches focusing on the mental health of children and adolescents affected by war and armed conflict. After an introduction to the overall topic, key concepts and frameworks by the instructor, small groups will elaborate on specific topics through self-study and present their findings to the plenary in the form of posters followed by a discussion. In so doing, participants will use and develop further competencies related to identifying relevant research, critically evaluating evidence and presenting findings.
