This course will focus on U.S. American Protest Songs from the 20th and 21st century. It will bring together conceptual strands from literary studies, popular culture, musicology, US-American history, and socio-political studies. We will construct a theoretical framework together that seeks to shed light on songs as media to express discontent and demand democracy and justice and as literary texts with a message. In a next step we will analyze a broad variety of songs against this backdrop. Through this, we will expand our knowledge of analyzing literary texts and of US-American Cultural Studies.
