300662 The Refugee Crisis and Humanitarian Response (MA: Soziologie der Globalen Welt) (S) (WiSe 2025/2026)

In this course, we study the humanitarian response to the refugee crisis. How and with what motivations do international humanitarian and relief agencies intervene to assist people in the context of violent displacement? What are their policies and how do they affect the livelihood of refugees? How do international agencies partner with local agencies if they do at all to deliver humanitarian aid to those in need? How has the refugee camp become a phenomenon of our times for the management of refugees? In this course, we will answer those questions and also use a holistic perspective from the perspective of refugee communities by finding the connection between micro- and macro dimensions of the humanitarian response. Not least we want to stress vernacular responses of refugees to re- organize their lives in times of existential crisis.
