Not least since Trump’s interest in Greenland, the Arctic has once again become the focus of global attention. This seminar takes students to the polar regions and offers a comprehensive understanding of geopolitical, environmental and socio-economic challenges in Arctic and Antarctica that goes beyond popular media headlines. In introducing polar social sciences, students gain profound insights into a variety of research topics – including, but not limited to, polar governance and strategic national interests, international law, Indigenous rights, climate change, as well as the role of science and technology. In discussing concrete examples and empirical material, students learn to apply political science to a regional case.
