This course will familiarise students with the rich English literature of the Romantic period (1780s to 1830s) with a particular focus on the political writing of this period and its contexts (e.g. the French, American and Haitian revolutions, as well as radical political movements and calls for political reform and the expansion of voting rights in Britain). We will analyse selected poems by canonical and less canonical or less studied writers. We will also examine some Romantic prose writing.
Studying these exemplary texts, we will engage in close readings and put to practice the analytical categories introduced in the Basic Module 2 ‘Introduction to Literary Analysis and Interpretation’.
