„Die Stärke des dokumentarischen Theaters“, so Peter Weiss in seinen ‚Notizen zum Dokumentarischen Theater‘, „liegt darin, dass es aus den Fragmenten der Wirklichkeit ein verwendbares Muster, ein Modell der aktuellen Vorgänge, zusammenzustellen vermag. Es befindet sich nicht im Zentrum des Ereignisses, sondern nimmt die Stellung des Beobachtenden und Analysierenden ein.“ Peter Weiss, Rolf Hochhuth und Heinar Kipphardt machen es sich in den 1960er Jahren zur Aufgabe, „im Wissen um die Verbrechen und Massenmorde im Holocaust […] das Theater als Instrument der Aufklärung [zu nutzen], Verdrängtes sichtbar und erfahrbar zu machen.“ (Brigitte Marschall) Sie greifen damit Formen des Theaters der Weimarer Republik auf und legen gleichzeitig das Fundament für eine Wiederkehr des Dokumentarischen auf den Bühnen der 1990er Jahre. Wir legen einen Schwerpunkt auf die drei bekanntesten Vertreter des Dokumentarischen Theaters, beschäftigen uns aber auch mit den Anfängen bei Erwin Piscator und verfolgen das Dokumentarische Theater bis in die Gegenwart.
