This seminar provides an introduction to the field of ‘linguistic landscaping‘ (or: LL), i.e. a versatile approach to how and why languages and text(s) are found in visual public spaces, for example on street and shop signs, advertising panels, official buildings as well as on signposts, and many more. We will investigate not only the forms, but, in particular, also the meanings and functions of signs in urban spaces.
Building on the linguistic foundations from both lectures, this seminar explores different linguistic varieties around the world, their societal contexts, and various sociolinguistic factors that reflect and/or determine the choice and setup of these (multilingual) signs. In particular, we will discuss aspects of societal multilingualism and language policy which are inseparably linked to constellations of power and democracy.
Apart from learning about major theoretical considerations in LL research, we will learn about and engage in hands-on research into linguistic landscapes ourselves. As part of a group project, students will learn to describe, analyse and interpret real-life examples from public spaces we are interested in.
Further details are provided in the first session.
Having completed the other elements of the Basis3 module (i.e. "Introduction to English Linguistics" (Basis3.1) and "Introduction to Sociolinguistics" (Basis3.2)) before attending this seminar is highly recommended.
