Bürgermeister und Stadtrat, Kirche und Rathaus, Markplatz und Stadtmauer: Institutionen und Orte, die bis heute unser Bild von einer Stadt prägen, haben ihren Ursprung im Mittelalter, einer Zeit, in der ein Großteil der deutschen Städte entstanden ist. Anhand von Beispielen geht der Grundkurs den sozialen und religiösen Strukturen in der mittelalterlichen Stadt nach und zeigt, welche unterschiedlichen Typen von Städten sich im Mittelalter und in der Frühen Neuzeit entwickelten. Ausgewählte Quellen verdeutlichen dabei exemplarisch die Arbeitsweisen der Geschichtswissenschaft und führen in die Methodik des Faches ein. Verbunden ist der Grundkurs mit einer zweitägigen Exkursion nach Brandenburg/Havel und Potsdam.
