Der erste Weltkrieg, dessen Beginn sich 2014 zum 100. Mal jährt, stellt nicht nur, aber besonders für den deutschen Protestantismus eine Epochenwende dar, sowohl im Verhältnis zum Staat als auch innerhalb der Theologie selbst. Einer von den evangelischen Kirchen mit getragenen deutschnationalen Kriegsbegeisterung mit wenigen Gegenstimmen steht eine erschütternde Krisenerfahrung gegen Ende des Krieges und während der Weimarer Republik gegenüber, die in Theologie und in der gesellschaftlichen Stellung der evangelischen Kirchen bis heute Wirkungen zeigt.
